There can be a large difference in content when listening to music as compared to watching a music video or dancing to it.

Similar to drawing, the content that can be stored in an individuals personal history of what music they have been exposed to is not just limited to what they talk about. Their personal family history may not be visible during conversations with others or with preferences seen in their current listening choices that are visible or not to others. Who they engage with socially or at school with may impact on the types of music that they are exposed to. Family members who play instruments can change the music in the house, the music that music that is listened to in the car, the music that is available in the house etc.

Being able to keep track of an individuals music history is important when looking to support communication about personal interests or exploring how and where to support greater variety or depth.  Access to the internet during therapy sessions for use of YouTube to look at different types of music is helpful to explore options for personal use for regulatory strategies.

Some students may seek out music that doesn’t have lyrics so that they can avoid listening to language that is negative in content. Providing them with music that is ‘safer’ to listen to is important to still allow them to experience / use this type of activity.

Movie soundtracks or audio books may enable families to travel more easily by having something for their loved one to narrow their focus of attention on so that they can cope with the physical restrictions of having to remain seated in a small area for a long period until they arrive at their destination. Being able to focus on something predictable that is right here with you in your thinking rather than focusing out on the world moving around you can help you stay focused on how your body is feeling  and not having to shift your attention over such a bigger distance.
