I don’t want

What are the signs of disengagement? What are the signs of internal health difficulties that shift your attention away from the task around you to what is happening within your body? How much does that mental blackboard inside your head get full of thoughts that distract or help yourself but not your attention to what is happening in front of you that you are being required to do?

How loud does I don’t want need to become? Where did we get established rules that only at a ‘certain age’ are you ‘allowed’ to do this? e.g. not allowed to use a keyboard to write until ____ grade. Why not? Where is the gold standard research on this? On all of the reasons as to why to say yes versus why to say no? Clinical reasoning needs to underlie each decision as to why an individual is communicating “I don’t want” and how you support or don’t support it. As there are very good reasons as to why it can be appropriate to ignore “I don’t want”, yet what are those circumstances, what are ‘all’ of them?
