Netball

Remembering the differences between Netball and Basketball keep you from getting in trouble. Your feet. They need to stop. That’s hard work!

Ankles need to be strong. Arms are used all the time. Getting them to work together can be challenging,  Netball balls move FAST and hard. Protecting yourself is important. You need to absorb the pressure coming at you. You need to be. Explosive in speed and in direction when throwing the ball, then you need to stand still and hold your spot without pushing or shoving too much and wait for the ball. There are spots to stand. X’s help. The ball has to go long distances up and down the court. It’s a bit easier than Soccer, throwing tends to be an easier developmental skill to get accuracy with rather than kicking. Throwing at the right height to go over peoples heads or around them takes practice.

It is a sport for Disability where attending practices can be more important than attending a game. Drills help team work for all individuals. Leagues where you learn drills with other teams can be designed and that’s the only thing you do on match days. It allows you to become used to working with unfamiliar people, with unfamiliar heights, with unfamiliar speeds of throwing. A way of learning patience during a fast game.

Kicking is a skill where you move forwards to the ball. In throwing you stand still. The ability to NOT need to think about your movement allows you to think more about the functioning of the team rather than just the fun and skill of kicking a ball. Netball is not Soccer. It is played on a court with a 31 x 16 metre boundary. Soccer covers distances of 105 x 68 metres. Kicking with accuracy over such a long distance is hard and requires more physical endurance with all the running back and forth. Netball has a significantly higher score. Significantly more opportunities to actually touch the ball.

Each team practices waiting but standing next to their partner for the other team. That is their X.
