Room use

Appropriate use of different rooms within the house also needs to be taught.

Where it is appropriate to get dressed or undressed is important to consider especially as the kids get older. If there is not enough room in the bathroom for a carer to get the individual dressed then learning / teaching how to wrap in a towel so that they can learn to not walk through the house with no clothes on is important. As kids become older when there are rotating shifts of carers in the home and other adults / people who come in and out it is important to teach these boundaries not only for independence but for child protection. Learning to take your pyjamas into the bathroom to get dressed there is important if there is not a bathroom directly off of your bedroom. There are challenges supervision wise with unknown adults / carer wise not being able to be seen behind a closed bedroom door, which is actually appropriate to learn to do as an individual in your own bedroom when others are around in the home. This is no different from closing the toilet door when using the toilet. Sight lines through the house to outside are important to consider again for child protection issues.
