Use of touch and physical handling

Being able to grade your own movements as a carer working with individuals with chronic conditions and complex medical needs is highly important when providing support for personal care that relates to movement of the individuals body or tasks where objects interact with them e.g. hair washing, feeding, getting dressed. Being able to regulate yourself as a carer involves being able to adjust the timing, speed, direction of movement etc of every single isolated component of your interaction. This can make the difference in someone allowing you to continue to wash their hair versus not. Is this a communication skill or is this an interaction skill?

Therapists often talk about the ‘art of interaction’.
